A minor is A, C and E. The CAGED system gives five shapes for it up the neck: the G shape from the 2nd fret, the E shape from the 5th fret, the D shape from the 7th fret, the C shape from the 9th fret and the A shape from the 12th fret. The A shape is also the open Am chord you may already know.

The notes of Am
Am is a minor triad: root, minor third and fifth (1 ♭3 5), which is a minor third (three frets) with a major third (four frets) on top. Every shape below is those three notes, doubled in different octaves.
How the five shapes connect
From the bottom of the neck up, the shapes run G (2), E (5), D (7), C (9) and A (12). Each one starts where the last one's top notes are, so playing them in order moves one chord up the whole fretboard. After the A shape, the G shape comes round again twelve frets higher.
Where the root, A, sits in each shape: G shape: low E and G; E shape: low E, D and high e; D shape: D and B; C shape: A; A shape: A and G. Find that string first and the rest of the shape falls into place around it.
Where Am appears
Am belongs to 8 keys: vi in C major, iii in F major and ii in G major; v in D minor, iv in E minor and i in A minor; iv in E harmonic minor and i in A harmonic minor.
Of those, C major, G major, D minor, E minor, A minor, E harmonic minor and A harmonic minor are keys guitarists play in constantly, because their open strings ring with the scale, so Am turns up often in songs.
Open strings and capo options for Am
Three open strings are part of Am: the low E string (the fifth), the A string (root) and the high e string (the fifth). Because the root is among them, you can let it drone under any of the shapes.

With a capo you can also play it as the Em shape with the capo at fret 5 and the Dm shape with the capo at fret 7.
