A minor pentatonic takes five notes from A minor and leaves out B and F, the 2nd and ♭6th. With no half steps between neighbouring notes, it is hard to land on a note that clashes with the chords of the key.

A Minor Pentatonic scale, frets 0–15. Roots (A) in green.

The root, A, sits on the low E string at fret 5 and on the A string open and at fret 12. Those are the anchors every position is built around.

Five of the six open strings belong to A minor pentatonic (E, A, D, G and high e), so they can ring against fretted notes; the other one will clash.

Position by position: Gm shape from the 2nd fret; Em shape from the 5th fret; Dm shape from the 7th fret; Cm shape from the 9th fret; Am shape from the 12th fret. The Am shape is shown at the 12th fret; it also works twelve frets lower, in open position.

What to play A minor pentatonic over

Play it over Am chords, a minor-key progression in A, or an A blues. Its five notes are also C major pentatonic, so the same shapes work over C major with C as home.

Add the ♭5, E♭, and it becomes the A blues scale.

The nearest keys are a fifth away: E minor pentatonic differs by one note: B instead of C; D minor pentatonic differs by one note: F instead of E.

To learn it, play the Gm shape from the 2nd fret slowly, saying each note name, then link it to the next position up. Land on A at the end of each run, and you'll hear the scale settle on its root.
