The notes of G

G major is a major third (four frets) with a minor third (three frets) on top. Root position puts G at the bottom (G, B and D); first inversion puts B at the bottom (B, D and G); second inversion puts D at the bottom (D, G and B).

Where the inversions sit in the CAGED shapes

The practice pad above shows G's triads inside each CAGED shape. Use the R, 2, 3 and V switches to see each arrangement:

  • Root position: C shape (fret 7), A shape (fret 10), G shape (fret 12) and E shape (fret 3).
  • First inversion: C shape (fret 7), G shape (fret 12) and E shape (fret 3).
  • Second inversion: C shape (fret 7), A shape (fret 12) and E shape (fret 4).

Where G appears

G belongs to 8 keys: V in C major, IV in D major and I in G major; III in E minor, VII in A minor and VI in B minor; V in C harmonic minor and VI in B harmonic minor.

Of those, C major, D major, G major, E minor and A minor are keys guitarists play in constantly, because their open strings ring with the scale, so G turns up often in songs.

Open strings and capo options for G

Three open strings are part of G: the D string (the fifth), the G string (root) and the B string (the third). Because the root is among them, you can let it drone under any of the shapes.

There's an open G chord at the nut: the G shape.

With a capo you can also play it as the E shape with the capo at fret 3, the D shape with the capo at fret 5 and the C shape with the capo at fret 7.

The closest chords to G share two of its three notes: its relative minor and the chords a fourth and a fifth away, which are its neighbours in G major.
