The D major scale across the whole neck
D Major scale, frets 0–15. Roots (D) in green.
The root, D, sits on the low E string at fret 10 and on the A string at fret 5. Those are the anchors every position is built around.
All six open strings are notes of D major, so open strings ring true anywhere in the key.
Position by position: C shape from the 2nd fret; A shape from the 4th fret; G shape from the 7th fret; E shape from the 9th fret; D shape from the 11th fret.
Chords in D major
The seven chords of D major are I D, ii Em, iii Fm, IV G, V A, vi Bm and vii° C°.
So I–IV–V in D is D, G and A; the pop progression I–V–vi–IV is D, A, Bm, G; and ii–V–I is Em, A, D.
Its relative minor is B minor, the sixth note: the same seven notes, centred on B.
The nearest keys are a fifth away: A major differs by one note: G instead of G; G major differs by one note: C instead of C.
To learn it, play the C shape from the 2nd fret slowly, saying each note name, then link it to the next position up. Land on D at the end of each run, and you'll hear the scale settle on its root.
