B Major scale, frets 0–15. Roots (B) in green.

The root, B, sits on the low E string at fret 7 and on the A string at fret 2. Those are the anchors every position is built around.

Three of the six open strings belong to B major (E, B and high e), so they can ring against fretted notes; the others will clash.

Position by position: A shape from the 1st fret; G shape from the 4th fret; E shape from the 6th fret; D shape from the 8th fret; C shape from the 11th fret.

Chords in B major

The seven chords of B major are I B, ii C♯m, iii D♯m, IV E, V F♯, vi G♯m and vii° A♯°.

So I–IV–V in B is B, E and F♯; the pop progression I–V–vi–IV is B, F♯, G♯m, E; and ii–V–I is C♯m, F♯, B.

Its relative minor is G♯ minor, the sixth note: the same seven notes, centred on G♯.

The nearest keys are a fifth away: F♯ major differs by one note: E♯ instead of E; E major differs by one note: A instead of A♯.

To learn it, play the A shape from the 1st fret slowly, saying each note name, then link it to the next position up. Land on B at the end of each run, and you'll hear the scale settle on its root.
