B minor pentatonic takes five notes from B minor and leaves out C♯ and G, the 2nd and ♭6th. With no half steps between neighbouring notes, it is hard to land on a note that clashes with the chords of the key.

B Minor Pentatonic scale, frets 0–15. Roots (B) in green.

The root, B, sits on the low E string at fret 7 and on the A string at fret 2. Those are the anchors every position is built around.

Five of the six open strings belong to B minor pentatonic (E, A, D, B and high e), so they can ring against fretted notes; the other one will clash.

Position by position: Am shape from the 2nd fret; Gm shape from the 4th fret; Em shape from the 7th fret; Dm shape from the 9th fret; Cm shape from the 11th fret.

What to play B minor pentatonic over

Play it over Bm chords, a minor-key progression in B, or a B blues. Its five notes are also D major pentatonic, so the same shapes work over D major with D as home.

Add the ♭5, F, and it becomes the B blues scale.

The nearest keys are a fifth away: F♯ minor pentatonic differs by one note: C♯ instead of D; E minor pentatonic differs by one note: G instead of F♯.

To learn it, play the Am shape from the 2nd fret slowly, saying each note name, then link it to the next position up. Land on B at the end of each run, and you'll hear the scale settle on its root.
