Notes and formula
| Degree | 1 | ♭3 | 4 | 5 | ♭7 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Note | G | B♭ | C | D | F |
G minor pentatonic takes five notes from G minor and leaves out A and E♭, the 2nd and ♭6th. With no half steps between neighbouring notes, it is hard to land on a note that clashes with the chords of the key.
The G minor pentatonic scale across the whole neck
G Minor Pentatonic scale, frets 0–15. Roots (G) in green.
The root, G, sits on the low E string at fret 3 and on the A string at fret 10. Those are the anchors every position is built around.
Two of the six open strings belong to G minor pentatonic (D and G), so they can ring against fretted notes; the others will clash.
Position by position: Em shape from the 3rd fret; Dm shape from the 5th fret; Cm shape from the 7th fret; Am shape from the 10th fret; Gm shape from the 12th fret. The Gm shape is shown at the 12th fret; it also works twelve frets lower, in open position.
What to play G minor pentatonic over
Play it over Gm chords, a minor-key progression in G, or a G blues. Its five notes are also B♭ major pentatonic, so the same shapes work over B♭ major with B♭ as home.
Add the ♭5, D♭, and it becomes the G blues scale.
The nearest keys are a fifth away: D minor pentatonic differs by one note: A instead of B♭; C minor pentatonic differs by one note: E♭ instead of D.
To learn it, play the Em shape from the 3rd fret slowly, saying each note name, then link it to the next position up. Land on G at the end of each run, and you'll hear the scale settle on its root.
