D minor pentatonic takes five notes from D minor and leaves out E and B♭, the 2nd and ♭6th. With no half steps between neighbouring notes, it is hard to land on a note that clashes with the chords of the key.

D Minor Pentatonic scale, frets 0–15. Roots (D) in green.

The root, D, sits on the low E string at fret 10 and on the A string at fret 5. Those are the anchors every position is built around.

Three of the six open strings belong to D minor pentatonic (A, D and G), so they can ring against fretted notes; the others will clash.

Position by position: Cm shape from the 2nd fret; Am shape from the 5th fret; Gm shape from the 7th fret; Em shape from the 10th fret; Dm shape from the 12th fret. The Dm shape is shown at the 12th fret; it also works twelve frets lower, in open position.

What to play D minor pentatonic over

Play it over Dm chords, a minor-key progression in D, or a D blues. Its five notes are also F major pentatonic, so the same shapes work over F major with F as home.

Add the ♭5, A♭, and it becomes the D blues scale.

The nearest keys are a fifth away: A minor pentatonic differs by one note: E instead of F; G minor pentatonic differs by one note: B♭ instead of A.

To learn it, play the Cm shape from the 2nd fret slowly, saying each note name, then link it to the next position up. Land on D at the end of each run, and you'll hear the scale settle on its root.
