G Minor scale, frets 0–15. Roots (G) in green.

The root, G, sits on the low E string at fret 3 and on the A string at fret 10. Those are the anchors every position is built around.

Three of the six open strings belong to G minor (A, D and G), so they can ring against fretted notes; the others will clash.

Position by position: Em shape from the 3rd fret; Dm shape from the 5th fret; Cm shape from the 7th fret; Am shape from the 10th fret; Gm shape from the 12th fret. The Gm shape is shown at the 12th fret; it also works twelve frets lower, in open position.

Chords in G minor

The chords of G minor are i Gm, ii° A°, III B♭, iv Cm, v Dm, VI E♭ and VII F.

Common minor progressions here are i–iv–v (Gm, Cm, Dm) and i–VI–III–VII (Gm, E♭, B♭, F). Songs in G minor often swap Dm for a major V chord, which comes from the harmonic minor.

Its relative major is B♭ major, with the same notes centred on the third.

The nearest keys are a fifth away: D minor differs by one note: E instead of E♭; C minor differs by one note: A♭ instead of A.

To learn it, play the Em shape from the 3rd fret slowly, saying each note name, then link it to the next position up. Land on G at the end of each run, and you'll hear the scale settle on its root.
