G major pentatonic takes five notes from G major and leaves out C and F♯, the 4th and 7th. With no half steps between neighbouring notes, it is hard to land on a note that clashes with the chords of the key.

G Major Pentatonic scale, frets 0–15. Roots (G) in green.

The root, G, sits on the low E string at fret 3 and on the A string at fret 10. Those are the anchors every position is built around.

All six open strings are notes of G major pentatonic, so open strings ring true anywhere in the key.

Position by position: E shape from the 2nd fret; D shape from the 4th fret; C shape from the 7th fret; A shape from the 9th fret; G shape from the 12th fret. The G shape is shown at the 12th fret; it also works twelve frets lower, in open position.

What to play G major pentatonic over

Play it over G major chords and the I, IV and V of the key (G, C, D). Its five notes are also E minor pentatonic: the same shapes, with E as home.

It suits country, pop and major-key blues, where the full G major scale's 4th (C) can sound like a wrong note over the I chord.

The nearest keys are a fifth away: D major pentatonic differs by one note: F♯ instead of G; C major pentatonic differs by one note: C instead of B.

To learn it, play the E shape from the 2nd fret slowly, saying each note name, then link it to the next position up. Land on G at the end of each run, and you'll hear the scale settle on its root.
