F♯ major pentatonic takes five notes from F♯ major and leaves out B and E♯, the 4th and 7th. With no half steps between neighbouring notes, it is hard to land on a note that clashes with the chords of the key.

It's the same pitch as G♭: also written G♭ major (6 flats). This page uses F♯ because it needs fewer accidentals, so every note is spelled with one letter each (F♯, G♯, A♯, B, C♯, D♯ and E♯).

F♯ Major Pentatonic scale, frets 0–15. Roots (F♯) in green.

The root, F♯, sits on the low E string at fret 2 and on the A string at fret 9. Those are the anchors every position is built around.

None of the open strings is a note of F♯ major pentatonic, so the scale is played entirely with fretted notes.

Position by position: E shape from the 1st fret; D shape from the 3rd fret; C shape from the 6th fret; A shape from the 8th fret; G shape from the 11th fret.

What to play F♯ major pentatonic over

Play it over F♯ major chords and the I, IV and V of the key (F♯, B, C♯). Its five notes are also D♯ minor pentatonic: the same shapes, with D♯ as home.

It suits country, pop and major-key blues, where the full F♯ major scale's 4th (B) can sound like a wrong note over the I chord.

The nearest keys are a fifth away: D♭ major pentatonic differs by one note: F instead of F♯; B major pentatonic differs by one note: B instead of A♯.

To learn it, play the E shape from the 1st fret slowly, saying each note name, then link it to the next position up. Land on F♯ at the end of each run, and you'll hear the scale settle on its root.
